Starting a D/s Relationship

Not particularly F/m but a good long discussion:
That is, until he told me that he planned on starting a D/s relationship right away and didn’t figure there was any real need or point to getting to know each other first, he feels that trust and knowledge etc will develop as the D/s relationship grows.
I think almost the exact opposite, that in order to have a successful D/s relationship, you have to get to know each other and have a friendly relationship where you know enough about your partner to trust them enough to submit to them BEFORE you start playing around with D/s.
